Tl;dr: This post dives into details on how Electric Era deployed our first five battery-backed EV charging stations, and how they’re benefiting retailers and drivers alike. In particular, it also underscores our ability to deploy EV fast charging stations, well, fast!
If you’re new here, here’s who we are: Electric Era offers turnkey, end-to-end solutions to deploy battery-backed EV charging stations efficiently for customers who want to attract new customers and delight existing ones. Recently, we delivered a fully operational, EV charging station at Costco’s Ridgefield, Washington location in just seven weeks, setting a new industry standard for processes that normally take months, if not longer. Further, our full stack solution—combining advanced software and hardware—promotes unmatched reliability, uptime, and many other benefits. Here’s more on how our Site Implementation team makes it possible.
Electric Era’s Site Implementation team takes our EV fast charging stations from the drawing board to steel in the ground and electricity delivered to EV charging customers. Deploying battery-backed DC Fast Charging involves much more complex engineering and construction compared to other EV charging projects, but the additional effort is well worth it as realized in faster install timelines due to reduced utility service sizing and improved profitability from utility rate optimization. reliability, uptime, and owner and customer satisfaction. Our dedicated Site Implementation team leverages deep experience in electrical engineering and project deployment to secure faster deployment timelines, which are also made possible by our battery-backed solution design.
As Electric Era achieves new milestones monthly, whether measured by station deployment, electricity delivered, or other metrics, it’s stepping back to analyze how our first projects showcase what our technology makes possible to solve customer challenges.
What’s Special: Electric Era’s first site! This location is an excellent demonstration of our ability to deploy high-power DC Fast Charging at locations with limited grid capacity, which is normally a constraint that hinders EV charging deployment. With only 20kW of 208v power available, EE’s installation was up and charging cars in just a few months. How did we do it? By using the existing store electrical service and 20kW of existing electrical capacity, the battery and charging stations were installed with distribution infrastructure fed from the existing panel. This avoided all of the cost and timeline involved with a dedicated utility service delivery (which can take up to 1-2 years on average or even longer in grid-constrained areas of the country like California), instead opening to the public in a matter of months and is now heavily used on a daily basis.
Battery: 125 kW / 220 kWh
Chargers: 150kW CCS / Chademo
Nameplate DC Output Capacity: 150kW
Grid Connection: 20kW
What’s Special: So far, this is Electric Era’s most heavily-used site. Our Quik Charge location was deployed in just 155 days from contract to commissioning. Quik Charge is a new charging provider in New England that took advantage of National Grid EV infrastructure rebate funding to reduce its expenses. Relying on a larger, new utility service connection would have extended transformer procurement timelines—instead, Electric Era was able to expedite deployment by keeping the service request under 150kW.
Battery: 125 kW / 220 kWh
Chargers: 200kW CCS / CCS
Nameplate DC Output Capacity: 200kW
Grid Connection: 140kW
What’s Special: Electric Era’s largest site! Located on the heavily-traveled I-5 corridor in Southern Oregon, this site replaced a single 50-kW charger with 12 stalls and 1200kW of nameplate high-power DCFC charging, supported by a larger 233 kW battery, dramatically expanding charging capacity. Deployed in less than 9 months, this station filled a crucial gap on the West Coast’s largest highway corridor. Seven Feathers offers a glimpse into the future of EV charging at large format sites with high throughput capacity, all while minimizing deployment timelines, grid impacts and new infrastructure needs.
Battery: 233 kW / 220 kWh
Chargers: 6x 200kW CCS / CCS
Nameplate DC Output Capacity: 1200kW
Grid Connection: 750kW
What’s Special: This station offers another great example of a fuel retailer adding EV charging to an existing retail location. It also leverages EE’s battery-backed architecture to make the highest possible use of a relatively small 208v utility service, turning it into a high-power EV fast charging experience for customers. With only 90kW of service, EE helps Space Age provide a 200kW charging experience with a speedy deployment of less than 90 days from final investment decision to commissioning go-live.
Battery: 125 kW / 220 kWh
Chargers: 200kW CCS / CCS
Nameplate DC Output Capacity: 200kW
Grid Connection: 90kW
What’s Special: Moberly Motors looked to Electric Era when it decided to add EV fast charging to its automotive dealership. Electric Era offered the only solution that would keep requirements below utility demand thresholds and provide 200kW+ fast charging, which was a requisite for Ford infrastructure program standpoints (200kW DCFC output minimum). Once again, our Site Implementation team’s ability to leverage the limited existing 208v service stepped up to 480v and supplemented with 125kW of capacity from the battery, makes MMC a great example of Electric Era’s comprehensive ability to provide high-quality EV fast charging customer experience with a small amount of grid capacity.
Battery: 125 kW / 220 kWh
Chargers: 2x 200kW CCS / CCS
Nameplate DC Output Capacity: 400kW
Grid Connection: 92kW
